…and finally, from Sucèa towards West
With the same ease, you could go on the roads towards West, in an handful of minutes, to reach the Ionic coast, the well-known beaches of Porto Cesareo, with its own wonderful wide isles which preserve its coastline reach of entertainment. From this point, you will be captivated by the natural park of Porto Selvaggio, you will be delighted by illuminated rocks, prepared for happy hours in Santa Caterina, and be attracted by Santa Maria al Bagno and some fortifications ruins called “Quattro colonne” (Four Columns), that smells of the Orient. You will be fascinated by the magic Gallipoli, with its beach parties, with the splendour of its historical centre and the irresistible smells of traditional recipes that have fresh fish just caught from the sea, as their fundamental ingredient. As you wander towards south, you could be revived in the crystalline sea and on the far-flung beaches, from Marina di Mancaversa to Torre Suda, going to the Messapian and golden Ugento, or, more far away, until Pescoluse, called “the Maldives of Salento”. You could revive yourself also in the shade of austere towers on the coast, that like sentinels, used to monitor the whole “Land of Otranto” and safeguard it against raids from Pirates and Saracens, who come from the sea. At the foot of these giant buildings, you will come across pretty villages and romantic landing places, such as Torre Mozza, Torre Pali or San Gregorio, before reaching again the high lighthouse that overlooks the luxurious, noble, Moorish villas in Leuca.
